Police Officer Recruit

So you want to start your career in Law Enforcement? Look no further! The Police Officer Recruit position is your starting point. An application for this position is the start of something new, exciting, and rewarding.

Police Officer Recruits are paid $37.48 an hour with a 5% increase in pay upon graduating the academy. With competitive pay, the highest quality of training, and endless opportunities for advancement, we are certain you will find a home here at the Sacramento Police Department!

Qualifications:

All Candidates MUST meet the following:

  • Be at least 21 years of age upon completion of the Academy.
  • Have a valid Class C Driver’s license.
  • No Felony convictions.
  • Possess a minimum of a HS Diploma (or GED test equivalent) and have completed at least 34 units from an accredited college or university.
  • Be legally authorized to work in the US (Please refer to Senate Bill 960 for specific details).

*Four (4) years of honorable military service can be substituted for the sixty (60) semester units educational requirement.

**Twenty-six (26) semester college units are earned upon graduation from the Sacramento Police Academy and applied to the sixty (60) semester unit requirement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Patrol a designated area of the city to preserve order, prevent crime, discover criminal acts, and make arrests.
  • Respond to radio dispatched or citizen requests for police services.
  • Conduct investigations, gather evidence, interview witnesses, take statements, make arrests, and issue citations.
  • Complete written reports as necessary or required.
  • Promote a community-based policing philosophy and strategy.
  • Attend, participate, and represent the department at a variety of community events and engagement activities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community members.
  • Provide first aid to injured subjects and those in crisis.
  • Testify in court at criminal hearings and trials.
  • Evaluate and control violent situations and persons; emphasize de-escalation tactics when appropriate.
  • Order and direct emergency equipment at accident and disaster scenes.
  • Search for missing persons.

Qualifications:

All Candidates MUST meet the following:

  • Completion of sixty (60) semester units, or ninety (90) quarter units from an accredited college or university.
  • Possession of a valid POST Basic Certificate issued by the State of California.
  • Current employment as a full- time sworn peace officer in a California POST participating law enforcement department or agency and two (2) years as a full-time sworn peace officer in a California POST participating law enforcement department or agency.
  • Possess a HS Diploma (or GED test equivalent), or have attained a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Be legally authorized to work in the US (Please refer to Senate Bill 960 for specific details).
