Dispatcher Recruit

Dispatcher Recruit is a training classification used for candidates qualified to learn the duties of a Dispatcher I. These candidates undergo training in a formal classroom setting, computer lab, and hands-on training program in the Sacramento Police Department's Basic Dispatch Academy.

Upon satisfactory completion and graduation from the Public Safety Communications Academy, the Dispatcher Recruit will be placed on probationary status as a Dispatcher I and assigned to the Communications Center for further on-the-job training. They will be tested throughout this training period must achieve passing grades in order to continue in the program. Failure to complete this training successfully will result in release from the program.

Qualifications:

All Candidates MUST meet the following:

  • Possess a HS Diploma (or GED test equivalent).
  • Completion of twelve (12) units from an accredited college or university.
  • One (1) year of customer service experience.
  • Successful completion of the Sacramento Police Department's Basic Dispatch Academy within the last twelve (12) months.

 

Alternative experience: 

  • Four (4) years of customer service experience may be substituted for college credit requirement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Receive emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public requesting police, fire, and local government service.
  • Determine nature and priority; dispatch units as necessary; and/or refer or transfer callers to appropriate service provider.
  • Maintain radio contact with all units on an assignment.
  • Coordinate emergency calls and relay information and assistance requests involving other law enforcement and firefighting agencies.
  • Query information from law enforcement communication networks relating to wanted persons, criminal history, stolen property, and CA DMV information.
  • Query and enter stolen, stored, and repossessed vehicle information.
  • Perform a variety of records keeping duties related to the computer aided dispatch system.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, empathy, and excellent customer service in accordance with departmental policy and the community-oriented policing concepts.
